A Few Tricks with Technology
Movie theaters are known to those with misophonia as a place of torture due to the munching of popcorn. But there is a simple trick to overcome this problem – ask for the headphones for the hearing-impaired. In some theaters, you will receive a pair of over-the-ear headphones with a built-in receiver. In others, you will receive a hand-held receiver and will need to provide your own headphones. Either way, you will have your own personal sound system. If you are extremely sensitive to the munching sound, then bring a pair of earplugs. You can wear the earplugs and then turn up the volume on your headphones. It is suggested that you sit in the center of the theater for the receiver to work best.
Hearing-impaired receivers are also available in many churches and university classrooms. The hand-held receiver seems to be more common at universities, and is also provided at my church. If you need to add noise to reduce the triggers of the person speaking, then you can use a splitter (in reverse) and add the sound of a noise app from your phone. This way, you get the benefit of reduced triggers from the speaker due to added noise, and isolation from triggers produced by those near you.
Technology today is marvelous. If you need noise cancelling headphones for your phone at work, speak up. There are already many devices designed for the hearing impaired that will help block triggers around you.
